Dexter Municipal Golf Course WELCOME to Dexter Muni Golf Course

A warm welcome to all our new members and a thank you to our returning loyal members. We would also like to extend a welcome to summer travelers just passing through the area with a round of golf on their agenda.

Dexter Muni is a challenging 9 hole course that plays to a par 70. There are two par 3's, six par 4's, and one par 5. The yardage on the front is 2,586 yards and the back is 2,655 yards. We take great pride in our course and we hope you enjoy playing golf in Dexter, Maine. Dexter Muni also offers a driving range and a putting green. Watch local papers during the season for golfing specials including cart and lunch at our bar and grill. An open house was held in April with refreshments and a raffle for single membership which was won by Sean Farnsworth. The 2008 playing season officially opened late April. League activities were well underway during the month of May. Dexter Muni is leased to Jim Costideo who oversees the day to day operation of the course. An Advisory Board, appointed by the Town Council and operating under a set of By-laws, works in cooperation with Jim to address operations, programs, and funding issues.

It was recently announced that Dexter Muni was one of four communities awarded a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant from the National Park Service for public recreational facilities. Dexter received $4,800, which will be matched through the municipal budget for the realignment of the No. 4 hole at the course. The matching funds were included in the budget for 2007-2008 and is currently available for the $9,500 project. Part of the funding will be used to correct drainage problems, reconstruct the cart paths and install irrigation. The project will commence mid-August and should cause no interruption to regular play.

Dexter Muni Golf Course 2007 Town Report
After record snowfall in April, it appeared that the golf season would be delayed indefinitely. However, we were able to open the course by late April; and in spite of a typical cool spring, we enjoyed very good golfing weather most of the year. Membership numbers were down slightly from 2006. Overall play, including member and daily fee players, was also down slightly from 2006. This trend is being seen at many clubs and reflects the general economic conditions in the area.

We did however see an increase in tournament play this year thanks in part to the Thursday League (open to members and non-members) and the addition of the Dexter/Guilford Cup. The Cup was a big success and will be an annual event. In addition, we teamed with the Dexter Recreation Department and offered a junior clinic. Participation in the clinic was excellent and the clinic will also become an annual event. Another new event this year was the Egg Scramble sponsored by the Golf Club Board of Directors. This was a very successful event (thanks to the hard work of Mary and Ross Morancie) with proceeds donated to the town to be used for course improvements. Thanks go out to the local KC's, Kiwanis, Dexter High and the Golf Boosters for holding their annual golf scrambles at Dexter Muni again this year. Our Indoor League continues to attract 15-20 regulars who use it as a way to beat "Cabin Fever".

Course conditions and improvements continue to be an important issue here at Dexter Muni. Overall course conditions were good throughout the year with the exception of some late season fungus on two greens. We were able to apply a broadleaf herbicide to the entire course for the first time in years. The results were noticeable immediately and will be continued yearly as funds allow. With the help of several hard-working volunteers (special thanks to Ken Gardiner and Tony Mayo) and Chapman's Pluming, we installed a complete pop-up irrigation system on all nine greens, a first for our course. This will save countless hours in labor, and will allow for a wider and more consistent application of water to the greens, fringes, approaches and surrounding rough.

Although the equipment is not getting any younger, there were no significant equipment issues in 2007.

As always, sincere thanks go out to our entire staff for all of their hard work and dedication to the course and it's supporters. And, thanks to all of our valued patrons, we really appreciate your support.

Respectfully Submitted,
Jimmy Costedio, Course Manager
