BANGOR--Penquis Community Action Program has received a grant of $30,000 from Eastern Maine Charities' HealthShare Grant Program, sponsored by Eastern Maine Healthcare. The grant, which will be made over a three-year period, will support the Penobscot Community Dental Clinic, making it possible to expand staffing and increase the number of individuals served.
The dental clinic, located at the Penobscot Community Health Center on Union Street in Bangor, serves residents of Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties, with an emphasis on serving those who are uninsured or underinsured. It opened at the end of September, 2002. In the first three months of operation, 266 patients were seen, an additional 552 individuals were entered in the system and are awaiting their appointment, and more than 500 individuals were placed on a waiting list.
"We have been overwhelmed by the number of people requesting services," said Laurie Eddy, Director of Health Services at Penquis CAP.
"The vast majority of patients are emergency cases who are in a great deal of pain and need extensive work. We are grateful to Eastern Maine Charities for the opportunity to expand staffing to better meet the need." The grant will increase staff time of the dental hygienist and dental assistant.
