DEXTER WINTER FESTIVAL 2011: FEBRUARY 12-20

Submitted by Lynn McKusick of Wassookeag Snowmobile Club: We're changing things up! Over the weekends the Town of Dexter and Wassookeag Snowmobile Club will host the eleventh annual Winter Festival on Lake Wassookeag. The theme this year is: "Represent A Holiday".

The theme is applied to the Town's Open Snow Sculpture Competition and Parade and other events so…think of Calendar related holidays such as Valentines, St. Patrick's, Easter, Memorial, Flag, Mother, Father, Independence, Columbus, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas Day…you get the idea!

Saturday, February 12

  • Snowmobile Drag Races (MSDRA) at Little Lake Wassookeag : CANCELLED DUE TO POOR ICE CONDITIONS
  • Registration 7:00am - 8:30am. Food booth on site.
  • Family Contra Dance at Universalist Church 6:30 pm -10 pm
Sunday, February 13
  • Snowmobile Radar Runs at Little Lake Wassookeag : CANCELLED DUE TO POOR ICE CONDITIONS
  • Registration 8:00am - 2:00 pm. Food booth on site.
Friday, February 18
  • Presentation of the DRHS "Back In The Day" Snow Sculpture Competition
  • Cash awards in the gym at Noon.
  • Chili Cook-Off at Maine Highlands FCU 11am - 2 pm at the CU. Cash prizes.
Saturday, February 19
  • Wassookeag Snowmobile Clubhouse Open House 7 am - 4 pm
  • Great home cooked breakfast, lunch and dessert menu!
  • Abbott Memorial Library host dedication of the Evelyn Bruce Reading Room 11 am
  • Roller Skating at the Town Hall 2-4 pm
  • Chicken Pie Dinner 4:30 pm -7 pm at K of C Hall
  • Winter Festival Adult Dance at K of C Hall 8 pm -12 pm
  • Dexter's Ice Skating Rink Open and Lit until 8 pm
  • Kids Sliding Party with Radar at DRHS Hill 9 am-11 am
  • (No fireworks this year…our apologies!)
Sunday, February 20
  • Wassookeag Snowmobile Clubhouse Open House 7 am -4pm
  • Town's Snow Sculpture Judging 10 am
  • Snowmobile Parade along RR Bed thru town 11am
  • Snow Sculpture & Parade Awards Presentation at Snowmobile Clubhouse at 12:15 pm
  • Dexter's Ice Skating Rink Open and Lit until 8 pm
MSDRA DRAG RACES: The Wassookeag Snowmobile Club will host the event on Little Lake Wassookeag at the Dexter Recreation Area off Route 23. Registration will begin at 7:00-8:30 am with racing beginning around 9:30 am. The entry fee will be $25 per class (other fees may apply) with 50% payback. Ice track distance is 660 feet. FMI call at Matt 924-5074.

CONTRA DANCE: The Universalist Church will host a family Contra Dance from 6:30 pm-10 pm. All dances taught. Admission is $5 per person or $12 per family. John McIntyre is the caller and music by Chris Prickett & Some Reel People.

RADAR RUN: The Wassookeag Snowmobile Club will host the event on Little Lake Wassookeag at the Dexter Recreation Area off Route 23. Registration will begin at 8:00 am till 2:00 pm sharp. Line up will begin around 9:00 am. The entry fee will be $5 for one run or $10 for three runs. Ice track distance is 1,000 feet. FMI call Matt at 924-5074.

CHILI COOK-OFF: The Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union will host a chili cook-off at the MHFCU from 11 am -2 pm. to benefit Ending Hunger in Maine. Judged by the public. Contestants must enter crock pots by 10:45 am and provide a list of ingredients. Make a $2.00 donation to MC's Campaign for Ending Hunger and taste ALL entries to vote for your favorite! Cash prizes to the 1st, 2nd,3rd place winners!

DINNER & DANCE: The WSC will host a Chicken Pie Dinner held at the K of C Hall from 4:30 -7:00 pm by donation to benefit the Hal Wilkins Memorial Scholarship Fund. To be followed by a…Winter Festival DJ' d Dance from 8:00 pm - midnight! (Must be 21 years old to enter the dance.) All adults attending the dinner prior will be waived the door charge of $5 per person. There will also be a 50/50 Raffle at the dance.

KIDS SLIDING PARTY: The WSC will host a children's sliding party on the slope near the Dexter Regional High School's football field. A competition using your own plastic sleds, saucers, tubes, cardboard, etc. in a seated position will be detected by radar for speed. There is no entry fee. Small prize to the winning participants.

SNOW SCULPTURES: The Dexter Regional High School Class Competition will be judged on Friday am on 2/18 . The theme is "Back In The Day". Cash Prizes will be given to each of the four classes. 1st-$100; 2nd-$75; 3rd-$50; and 4th-$25. There are two categories for the town's open competition themed "Represent A Holiday" at the Lake Wassookeag Beach Area off Route 23. 1) Business/Organization and 2) Individual/Family. Cash award and trophy to first place and a $50 cash award to Best In Show! Registration is required by February 14th to compete. Forms can be picked up at the Dexter Town Office or on the website: www.dextermaine.org . There is no entry fee. Work can begin on February 17th to be judged on Sunday February 20th at 10 am sharp! Presentation of awards given at the Wassookeag Snowmobile Clubhouse on the Number Ten Road around 12:15.

SNOWMOBILE PARADE: Parade participants will gather at McFarland Street (near the Dexter Shoe buildings) beginning at 10 am. The parade will begin promptly at 11am down the RR Bed stopping briefly at the Four Seasons Adventure Trail located behind the Dexter Fire Department to be judged. Presentations of the awards will immediately follow the parade at the Wassookeag Snowmobile Clubhouse on the Number Ten Road. Registration is required.
Forms can be picked up at the Town Office or on the website: www.dextermaine.org. There is no entry fee.
Prizes will be awarded in three competition categories:
1) Business/ Organization
2) Individual/Family
3) Best Costume.

Prizes will also be awarded to:
1) Best Antique Snowmobile
2) Youngest Snowmobile Operator/Participant
3) Most Snowmobile Club Members participating in Parade.
