In two break-ins, the doors were pried open to gain entry and gasoline, a flashlight, hats and gloves were reported missing. Earlier this month, employees reported an attempted break-in, according to Dexter Police Chief Jim Emerson.
Part of the garage had a security system, but that has now been expanded to the entire facility, and there have been no burglaries since, the chief said.
In an unrelated police matter, Emerson said Chad Beal, 20, of Dexter was charged late Friday with burglary. Other charges may be lodged. Beal's arrest came as the result of an investigation into a fight earlier this month at a local supermarket, Emerson said.
The altercation, which involved two juveniles and two adults, was overheard by Cpl. Alan Grinnell, who was off-duty and shopping at the time. After calling the on-duty officer, Grinnell attempted to break up the fight and was assaulted by one of the juveniles, Emerson said. Grinnell did not require medical treatment, he said.
Arrested as a result of the fight was Dale Melvin, 18, of Dexter, who was charged with assault to a juvenile. Lisa Getchell, 41, of Dexter was arrested on a charge of obstruction of government administration in connection with the fight. Both have made their initial court appearances on the charges. The two local juveniles also face charges.
During a probation check on Getchell after her arrest and subsequent release, police found marijuana and what is believed to be hashish, according to Emerson. He said she was charged with possession of scheduled drugs as a result.
When police later received a report of a break-in at a Park Street home, the officer who helped with the probation check recalled seeing some of the items reported missing at Getchell's home, Emerson said.
