10th Annual Teens Who Care Awards recognize outstanding volunteer service
Saturday, March 01, 2008
MAINE - The 2008 Teens Who Care Awards will be presented to six Maine young people for outstanding service to their communities: Amber Casterlin (Brunswick), Lacie Craven (Machiasport), Rebecca Fick (Garland), Ashley Morgan (Lewiston), Katie Moskowitz (Saco), and Caleb Nickerson (Lincoln). The award presentations and ceremony will be held at the Portland Museum of Art on Monday, April 7. Hosting the evening will be NEWS CENTER’S Lee Nelson and Sharon Rose.
  • Amber Casterlin is co-chair of the Brunswick Community for All Ages initiative, the only high-school-age member of this committee united to create a stronger, healthier, more vibrant community.
  • Lacie Craven owns her own flock of sheep; she shears and processes the fleeces, spins them into yarn, and then knits mittens, hats, gloves, and sweaters for the needy in her community.
  • Rebecca Fick uses Key Club and Student Council leadership at Dexter Regional High School as powerful springboards for important and innovative fundraising campaigns.
  • Ashley Morgan is a member of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council (LYAC), through which she and other young people created “U BOOZE U LOOZE,” a grassroots student effort to combat underage drinking.
  • Katie Moskowitz has volunteered on a weekly basis at the Crossroads Youth Center, a performing arts-based afterschool program, for more than 4 years.
  • Caleb Nickerson volunteers 6 hours each week with KidCare America, an after-school mentoring program for at-risk children.
More detailed information about each of these teens and their volunteer efforts is available at WCSH6.com and WLBZ2.com, or by contacting the Maine stations at 1-800-464-1213.

Teens Who Care is a unique program in Maine, administered by WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2, who received 60 nominations this year. This year’s judges included: Jim Bentley (Bangor Y), Robin Chimbroski (Ronald McDonald House), Darren Hurlburt (MES), Rita Shea Ready (MES), Judy Horan (WLBZ 2), and Charlene Belanger (WCSH 6).

Each of the six teens will be honored with a short documentary-style “profile” which will debut to the attendees that evening at the Museum, to be televised later on WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2 in the Teens Who Care 2008 10th Anniversary Special on May 31, 8:00pm and on NEWS CENTER. In addition, 30-second “salute” spots will air on WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2 throughout the months of May and June.

Each teen will be awarded a $2000 scholarship by MES, Maine Education Services, your Maine Source for Student Loans, (www.mesfoundation.com), sponsor of Teens Who Care.
