By Diana Bowley, Of the NEWS Staff - DEXTER — After serving as Monson’s town manager for the past year, Judy Doore is returning to her hometown to serve as Dexter’s first female town manager.

The Dexter Town Council voted unanimously at a special meeting Monday to hire Doore. She will begin in mid-June at a starting salary of $46,000 with benefits. After a six-month probationary period, her salary will increase to $48,000.

“We had some good candidates,” Dexter Town Council Chairman Peter Haskell said Tuesday. Of the 16 people who applied for the position, five were interviewed. Doore outshone the others because of her job experience, he said. The fact that she lives in the community was a bonus, according to Haskell.

Doore, 56, has 23 years in municipal government and said she is eager to begin her new job. “I’m very excited to work with them, it’s a larger community, it’s my community,” the Abbot native said Tuesday. She said she planned to remain in the Dexter position for the duration of her career. Doore began her career in municipal government in 1982 in East Millinocket, and in 1998 she became Corinna’s town manager. She took the Monson position in 2004.

“I could not have asked for more supportive boards than I’ve had in Monson,” Doore said. She said the town employees have such a historical knowledge of the town that her replacement should find it very helpful.

In Dexter, Doore said, she plans to focus her efforts on economic development, to get the town-owned properties and buildings back onto the tax roles.
