Tuesday, May 26, 2009
SKOWHEGAN, Maine - Skowhegan Savings is excited to announce the winners of the "Promise for the Future" College Scholarships for 2009. Fifty students, grades 3-6, were selected from within the communities of Skowhegan Savings to receive a $100 Education Savings account. The winners of the scholarships come from the towns of Albion, Anson, Belgrade, Bingham, Brownville, Clinton, Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft, Embden, Exeter, Guilford, Lagrange, Madison, Milo, Moscow, New Portland, North Anson, Oakland, Skowhegan, Starks, Solon and Smithfield.

"Skowhegan Savings and our employees have made a commitment to our communities' children and we believe that in order to see true and lasting economic development in this region, it begins with education," stated Skowhegan Savings President and CEO, John Witherspoon. "While $100 is a long ways from paying college tuition, we believe that these scholarships are a motivating force and send the right message to the students at a critical age and encourage them to pursue their dreams of attending college."

Skowhegan Savings partnered with Bob Stuart, president of Yarmouth Educational Consultants, Inc., to lead workshops at the schools to answer student's questions about career paths, college selection, and the cost of higher education. Stuart has 14 years of experience advising students and their families on college opportunities throughout Maine and nationwide. He is a well-known and highly respected college consultant with a strong commitment to Maine.

The goals of "Promise for the Future" are to ensure that all students know they can attend college, encourage them to explore their college opportunities before high school, to be an education resource for students and parents of the communities served by the bank, and to promote communication between communities and their students about the opportunities a college education can create. Skowhegan Savings is proud to have offered "Promise for the Future" scholarships since 2001.
