Legislators to cast for charity
Wednesday, June 12, 2002
AUGUSTA, Maine -- This Saturday, legislators from around the state won't be casting votes, but casting fishing lines to raise money for charity. The sixth Annual Governor's Cup Charity Bass Tournament will take place on Lake Cobbossee in Winthrop, and there will be senators, representatives and legislative staff participating.

The catch, release and measure tournament will pit members of the house against members of the senate. At stake is at least $1,000.00, which will go to the winning team's choice of charity. Last year, the victorious senate donated their proceeds to the "Hooked on Fishing" program. Presently, the House leads the series 3-2 after the senate captured last year's cup.

The day will begin at 7:00 with a continental breakfast shoreside at the Lakeside Motel on Lake Cobbossee. The Lakeside Motel is located in East Winthrop on Route 202. Shortly thereafter, legislators will take to the waters in a boat with a captain provided by the Maine State Bass Federation. Governor King is expected to arrive at approximately 11:00 a.m.

Teams will fish through the morning, rain or shine, and once the fishing is complete, there will be a picnic lunch, followed by an awards ceremony at 2:00 p.m. At the awards ceremony, Governor King will present the winning team with the Governor's Cup. The cup currently resides with the senate.

The tournament is open to all in the legislature and has grown in the number of participants each year. While many of those participating have fished before, for others it is their first time.

Those interested in attending should take Route 202 west from Augusta through the Manchester traffic light. Approximately two miles after traffic light, the Lakeside Motel will be on your left. This area will be the headquarters on the day of the event.
