Ted Nokes, a music teacher and Band Director for SAD 46 was recently named to the Maine Music Educator's Hall of Fame, during their yearly conference held at the USM campus in Gorham, Maine. Nokes has been teaching for over 30 years, and has worked tirelessly to help in numerous capacities, not only at the school level, but also at the regional District V level and at the state level. Nokes not only teaches in SAD46, but also is an on-call percussionist with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, performs consistently with the UMaine Percussion Ensemble based in Orono, and has held many different positions within both district V and state groups over the years, such as former Chair of the Allstate Festival, band manager for numerous festivals, and Board member for Maine Music Educator's Association. Some of the things shared about Mr. Nokes during the nomination process include: “For years now, it seems to always be Ted, who is one of the first to volunteer, to either host, manage or lead sectionals (extra rehearsal with a small group). You will see him after every festival either helping with chairs and stands or packing up his percussion equipment, that he graciously took apart at his school, fit into his car, lugged to the festival, put back together for use, took back apart and returned to his school.” “Ted also works in the summer as the Dean of Students at the MSYM summer camp. He is strict, but fun with the students, giving them memories of band camp that will last a life time.” “Mr. Nokes is a highly respected educator around the state of Maine. He has helped organize and run several statewide very successful music events. His passion for music and children has not faded over the years. You only need to attend one of his yearly concerts to attest to his enthusiasm. He brings a sense of humor to the classroom and his students greatly appreciate his wide range of knowledge and experience with all types of instruments.” After the award was presented, Mr. Nokes was heard to say, “I'm just doing what we as educators should be doing. I don't do anything more than most of the people in this room” (the conference banquet at which he was presented his award). This statement exemplifies Ted Nokes' philosophy of his role as a music educator and the reason why he is an outstanding representative of the Maine Music Educator's Hall of Fame. |
