Thursday, June 10, 2004
AUGUSTA, Maine -- This Sunday, June 13, legislators from around the state won't be casting votes, but casting fishing lines to raise money for charity. The eighth annual Governor's Cup Charity Bass Tournament will take place on Lake Cobbossee in Litchfield, and nearly 20 senators, representatives, legislative staff and the Governor are expected to participate.

The catch, measure, and release tournament will pit members of the house against members of the senate. At stake is $1,000.00, which will go to the winning team's choice of charity. Presently, the house leads the series 4-3.

The day will begin at 7:30 with a continental breakfast shoreside at the Lakeside Motel and Marina on Cobbossee Lake in East Winthrop on Route 202. Shortly thereafter, legislators will take to the waters in a boat with a captain provided by the Maine State Bass Federation.

Teams will fish through the morning, rain or shine, from 8:00 until 12:00 p.m. and once the fishing is complete, there will be a lunch, followed by an awards ceremony. Governor Baldacci is expected to arrive and fish at 11:30 . Commissioner Martin will present the Governor's Cup trophy to the winners as soon as the scoring is completed.

The tournament is open to all in the legislature.

Directions: In Augusta, take Exit 109, and follow Route 202 through Manchestert to East Winthrop. The Lakeside Motel and Marina on Cobbossee Lake will be on your left after you first see the lake.
