 By Diana Bowley of the BDN Staff: DEXTER, Maine — An officer who has served the department for 27 years was appointed Thursday as Dexter’s new police chief.
James “Jim” Emerson, 58, of Corinna, who was one of three employees interviewed for the position, will receive a salary of $50,689. The job was never advertised outside of the department. Emerson has been acting chief since Arthur Roy resigned in April. “I see a real potential there,” Dexter Town Manager Dave Pearson said Monday, of Emerson. “Jim happens to agree we need more community policing and more presence in the school system and those are two big things I want to see happen.” Emerson said he planned to become much more involved in community policing. He plans to meet with businesses, organizations and schools to see what these groups would like to see or have done in the community regarding law enforcement. Having served previously as sergeant, Emerson said Monday he would take his time in promoting someone to his former rank. He said a police officer would be hired to fill the vacancy created by his promotion. “I’m proud to get the job and I’ll do my best for the citizens of Dexter,” Emerson said.
