DOVER-FOXCROFT - General surgeon Ruth O'Mahony, M.D. has joined Pamela Nourse, M.D. and Brian Miller, M.D. on the staff of Mayo Surgical Associates, located on the campus of Mayo Regional Hospital. Dr. O'Mahony has practiced at Mayo as a long-term replacement surgeon since May, 2008, and has now accepted a permanent appointment to the hospital's active medical staff. She was a staff surgeon in Nashua, N.H., prior to her move to Maine. Board certified in general surgery, Dr. O'Mahony manages a broad spectrum of surgical conditions affecting many areas of the body. Breast, hernia, gall bladder and bowel surgeries are common procedures, and a variety of diagnostic techniques are employed, including endoscopy. Dr. O'Mahony completed a clinical fellowship year in laparoscopy at the Cleveland Clinic Florida, receiving specialized training in minimally invasive surgery of the abdomen. Dr. O'Mahony earned her B.S. in chemistry at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, and then attended the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston on a U.S. Air Force Health Professions Scholarship, earning her medical degree in 1994. She began her residency training in general surgery at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville. Post-graduate training was interrupted from 1997-2000 while Dr. O'Mahony served as medical director of emergency services at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. Following her U.S. Air Force service, Dr. O'Mahony completed general surgery residency training at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, and at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Mass. While at the Lahey Clinic, she also served as a clinical instructor for the Tufts University School of Medicine.
