License sales continue rise slowly

AUGUSTA, Maine -- Since hitting a low point in 1997, hunting licenses sales in Maine have been on an upward climb, reversing a trend that saw hunting license sales decrease for five years.

The numbers below detail license sales for the past eleven years:

1990 - 217,543
1991 -- 220,056
1992 - 224,387
1993 - 223,302
1994 - 218,319
1995 - 213,129
1996- 210,183
1997 --209,021
1998 -- 209,992
1999 - 213,752
2000 - 213,984

"Outdoor introductory programs such as Becoming an Outdoorswoman, Hooked on Fishing, and Youth Field Days that target non-traditional license holders have become an important tool in reversing the license sale decline," said Don Kleiner, Director of Information and Education for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. "Increased marketing efforts both in state and throughout the northeast also play a significant part in increasing license sales."
