Monday, October 30, 2006
By Larry Mahoney - Bangor Daily News - DEXTER - Senior striker Mike Wharff scored a pair of goals and assisted on Jarrod Robinson's pair as the fifth-seeded Piscataquis Community High School Pirates of Guilford held off second seed Dexter 4-3 in their Eastern Maine Class C boys soccer final Friday.

PCHS, now 12-4-1, will face the winner of the Western C final between Traip Academy of Kittery and North Yarmouth Academy for the state title next Saturday. Dexter finished 11-3-3.

Wharff opened the scoring just 1:24 into the game and, after Rick Stewart drew Dexter level, Robinson gave the Pirates the lead for good with 13:49 remaining in the half.

Wharff and fellow senior Robinson scored 11:24 apart in the second half to expand the lead to 4-1 but the Tigers rallied furiously in the waning moments as Aaron Woodman scored with 7:38 remaining and Dan Beatham knocked home a Woodman rebound with 1:18 left.

But the Pirates hung on.

Ryan Martell made six saves on 31 shots for PCHS while Dexter's Chris Eastman finished with three saves on 19 shots.
