Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition: DDATT Activities
Wednesday, December 05, 2012
What's coming up:
Movie Night: We're changing the format for the monthly movie event. We'll be skipping December 7 and starting again on January 4, 2013 with a new format that will stress discussion of topics important to DDATT as well as to local towns and people. Some months we'll feature a short movie and some months we'll feature a guest speaker. Some months will just get right to the discussion. We're planning to start with the eight main goals of DDATT as outlined in our brochure, but we also encourage all interested persons to submit ideas for discussion topics at any time by contacting Sam or Ed, or anyone else on the present DDATT steering committee (Liz, Ram Das, Pegg, and Linda). We're hoping that these discussions will eventually lead to more concrete actions that will benefit the towns of the DDATT region as we all try to deal with the new realities in our economies and societies.

REACH program:The Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance's Reach Center is a non-profit organization working to identify, attract, engage, and challenge Maine youth ages 10-18 who demonstrate both facility and enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We are currently developing a program that will assist communities with meeting these goals by giving support, making connections with existing programs and resources, and offering new resources for these communities. The Greater Dexter/Dover Area will be the first STEM Hub in the state, and will help to shape the program both here and across the state. FMI: Alyson Saunders, alyson.saunders@reachcenter.me

Re-Use Barn at the Mid Maine Solid Waste facility in Corinna/Dexter: A group of local citizens are planning to erect a Re-Use Barn, a storage building for accepting and dispensing useable and clean items donated by the public (stuff that's no longer wanted by its owner but too good to just toss). The main goal is to reduce the amount of materials entering the landfill. Lots of details remain to be worked out, especially to determine if there's enough volunteer support for staffing the Barn every Saturday during warm weather. If you have interest in donating 2 to 3 hours of your time per month to help staff the Barn, or may be interested in helping with the actual construction, please contact Bev Crockett at 277-4221 or info@ddatt.org.

Calendar
December 7, Friday: movie night at the Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville.
The documentary Chasing Ice will be at the Railroad Square this Friday through the following Thursday. It's a powerful movie about climate change and its affects on the glaciers of the world. They filmed for 3 years, risking life and limb to capture what's happening. We're going to go on Friday night if you are interested. We'll get down there early and get tickets around 5:30 or so, and eat dinner first. Iver Lofving (ilofving@msad54.org), Skowhegan Area Transition.

January 4, 2013, Friday: DDATT public forum on "Energy", 7-9 PM, Dexter, Abbott Memorial Library
