DEXTER - Three area judges awarded first place in the Abbott Memorial Library's 2nd Annual Fruitcake Contest to Garland resident Judy Hummel for her Maine Fruitcake. The second place winner was Jane Steiner from Dexter and third place was won by Joan Reed of Dexter. The judging of the fruitcakes was held on Saturday, December 12th. Ten fruitcakes were entered and the judges carefully evaluated each for presentation before tucking in and scoring each for taste and texture. The judges were Corinne Neal of Dexter, John Quinn of Garland and Roger Brawn of Dexter. Mrs. Hummel's cake was the hands down winner for first place. Made entirely of Maine grown products, the cake used Maine butter, honey, maple syrup, blueberries, apples, black walnuts and featured whole wheat flour grown year in Ripley. After sampling all ten cakes, Librarian, Liz Breault declared the event another success. "Each cake was delicious and unique," she declared. "It was wonderful to have cakes entered from as far away as Brownville Junction." She is already planning next year's contest and hopes to have even more cakes entered.
