Dexter Town Hall History
April 21, 1856:
"It was voted to build a new town hall, to borrow money to pay for same, on 5, 10, or 15 years. Choose Lysander Cutler agent to obtain same."
August 18, 1856:
"To see if town will vote to build belfry on town hall and authorize loan for same." (voted to pass by the article)
March 23, 1857:
"Voted that Josiah Crosby be agent to hire money to complete payment for town hall in case Lysander Cutler fails to do so."
All the design and construction was done by local Dexter citizens. Phineas Gee and Skimmer Lane excavated the celler. Levi Williams and Levi Bridgham put in the foundation. Stanely Plummer's father Daniel put up the frame and claimed 70,000 feet of hemlock and cedar lumber was used in the construction of the building.
Samuel C. Small had charge of the joiner work. W.H.P. Bement was in charge of the construction workers. Issac M. Russ had charge of the mason work with Ben. F. Eldridge as his assistant, and Barney O. Flanigan was head tender.

2006- RENOVATION
April, 2006, Municipal Officials were invited to Augusta to the Hall of Flags to receive a check in the amount of $165,000 from the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). This money was awarded through a competitive application process in the Community Development Block Grant Public Facilities Program (CDBG). Before a community can apply for these funds matching funds must be committed. The Town Council voted to use $41,500 of Reserve Funds (set aside for future repairs of the building) as our matching funds. Therefore we were eligible to apply for $165,000; to make a total project cost of $206,500. The initial letter of intent was submitted to DECD in December, 2005 and the Town was notified we were successful in our application on February 17, 2006. Architect was hired: G L Frost Architecture, and at the end of this fiscal year we are well on our way to beginning the "Town Hall Project". We expect completion in early 2007.
